Living in the traditional district

The Warenburg area in Villingen-Schwenningen has received a complete make-over in recent years. A total of 120 new apartments have been built in four construction phases. When redesigning the district, the focus of the planning stage was the coexistence of young and old from the beginning. The buildings with flat roofs meet all equipment requirements and they are particularly energy-saving in use. The modern ventilation technology ensures the highest energy efficiency and pleasant feel-good climate in the attractive rental housing.

A new district with sustainable planning

The building envelope must be sufficiently insulated so that these energy savings can be realised, however, this prevents the natural exchange of air in the apartments. Conventional ventilation by opening windows is counterproductive because it results in excessive energy losses, especially in winter. The ventilation concept according to DIN 1946-6 was created in advance as part of the energy-related planning; with the result that a ventilation system is required that implements the requirements of the standard without user action and continuously ensures fresh and pleasantly tempered room air.

Ventilation systems imperceptibly ensure healthy air quality

The cooperative building association decided to use KWL central units, which were installed in the basement, because of cost-efficiency reasons and space constraints. Eleven residential units were provided with the Helios KWL System EC 1800 S for standing floor installation. The Passive House certified system has a heat recovery efficiency of up to 90% and thus supports the high energy building standard. The intake air is drawn in via the adjacent building and led through the ground to the ventilation unit. This ensures frost protection in winter and a reduction in the intake air temperature in summer.

While the connection to the individual floors was made with insulated spiral ducts, the FlexPipe Plus duct system takes over the air distribution within the residential unit. The distribution boxes for the supply and extract air ducts are inconspicuously installed in the bathroom or hallway wall in each residential unit. The cooperative building association Villingen eG did not have to make any compromises in the high-quality furnishing of the homes due to the ventilation solutions from Helios. The different equipment variants of the apartments, the barrier-free access and the light-flooded inner courtyards contributed to building of an attractive, intergenerational new district in the southern part of Villingen.
